Info
Institute Of Applied Exophysics (IAE) is a fictional organization from the Russian role-playing game "Age of Aquarius". In the story, it is often referred to simply as "The Institute". It was established in 1924 as a scientific research organization dealing with paranormal phenomena. The need to create such an organization arose after the Bolsheviks, having come to power, discovered that much of what was rejected as superstition by the Marxist worldview really existed. Two organizations were created: the IAE and the Commission of the Cheka on Lycanthropy and Ghoulism, which was engaged in the eradication of vampires and werewolves. Years have passed. The commission turned into a special department of the GRU, and then the KGB.
In 1945, the Nettersheim Treaty was signed. It was an agreement concluded by the special services departments of the major countries of the world dealing with paranormal phenomena. And the Special Department became the Soviet part of this organization. Their goal was to maintain a regime of state secrets around supernatural phenomena until 2015. IAE made many discoveries in exophysics - the science that deals with the explanation of paranormal phenomena. But the Soviet Union collapsed, the corresponding department of the KGB ceased to exist, and the Institute was left without an armed hand.
And then, on May 23, 1992, a mysterious catastrophe occurred. The main building of the IAE was destroyed, and most of the employees died. No one has been able to conclude whether it was a natural disaster, the result of an unsuccessful experiment, or a terrorist attack. The rest of the staff was led by Boris Ivanov, head of the Institute's financial department, and announced the creation of a new militant organization whose goal would be to fight paranormal crime. The name of the organization remained the same - Institute Of Applied Exophysics.
Most of the former employees of the Fourteenth (Paranormal) Department of the KGB returned to work at the IAE, and it began to expand on the principle of a network organization. Soon, IAE employees found the legendary "Gold of the Party", and with these funds the Institute expanded its network throughout Russia. And in 1994, the IAE was recognized by the Nettersheim Treaty as the legal successor of the 14th department of the KGB.
IAE Structure
The IAE is controlled from the General Staff. Regional headquarters are subordinate to him, and those are cells, small groups of agents working under various legends, who, in fact, keep order among magicians, psychics, vampires, ghosts and similar personalities. IAE agents never see their superiors, and receive orders through magical teleportation devices - transport pentagrams.
IAE has not been a state organization since 1992, but nevertheless it is pro-government and monitors compliance with Russian legislation. It exists under a veil of deep secrecy, since one of the conditions of the Nettersheim Treaty was a global regime of secrecy in everything related to the paranormal until 2015. One of the most important tasks of the IPE is to maintain this secrecy.
Allies of the IAE
The Institute of Applied Exophysics recognizes the right to exist of organizations that do not violate Russian laws and do not disclose the secret of the existence of paranormal phenomena. With two such organizations, he maintains an unofficial "Triple Alliance". The two organizations are DEFENDER and Utopians.
DEFENDER is a non-governmental paramilitary organization whose goal is to prevent the apocalyptic events associated with the onset of the Age of Aquarius. The founder of the DEFENDER was Georgy "Buran" Zheleznyak, a former member of the radical leftist organization of the Red Army, who contributed to the Institute of Applied Exophysics. The organization was officially created as a private security company, in fact, it performed the role of legalized mercenaries (similar to the real-life American organizations DynCorp and Blackwater). However, this was just a way for the DEFENDER to support himself financially and at the same time prepare for his true purpose. The main building of the DEFENDER - the Academy - is located 500 km from Moscow. There are also branch offices in all major cities of Russia. The fighters of the DEFENDER are trained according to the special forces program, in which the basics of magic and extrasensory perception are also introduced.
Utopians are a variegated amorphous party of people and other intelligent beings, united with the beginning of a new era into a single social network, the task of which is to study and exploit magic and many other opportunities that have become available. This group is a niche for lone adventurers, accidentally or intentionally involved in all sorts of paranormal incidents. The basis of the ideology of the Utopians as a movement is the fact that there are indeed aspects of the world order where the truth is hidden and, perhaps, unattainable.
